Week14 - Plants

Virtual Experiment - Individual Task

The virtual experiment is from http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks2bitesize/science/living_things/help_plants_grow/read1.shtml

Topic: Helping plants grow well

Introduction
Plants need air, light, warmth, water and nutrients to be healthy. If they are healthy, they can continue making their own food through photosynthesis. You can also know about the important parts of a plant - roots, leaves and the stem.

A healthy plant is upright with green leaves.

A seed will not produce a plant at all if it is kept too cold. The seed needs warmth to germinate and start to grow into a healthy plant.
Illustration of a seed that has started to grow roots
A plant that is kept in a dark place will grow tall and spindly in search of light and then become weak and die.

A plant that is not watered will have a weak stem and dried up leaves and will eventually die.

How the experiment works?
  • The roots of a plant take up water and nutrients from the soil. The roots also keep the plant steady and upright in the soil; they "anchor" the plant.
  • The stem carries water and nutrients to different parts of the plant.
  • The leaves use light from the sun, along with carbon dioxide from the air and water to make food for the plant. This process is called photosynthesis.

What do students learn from the experiment.

From the experiment, students learn how to help plants grow well and what a plant needs to grow. Students can also observe the important parts of plant do such as stem, leaves and roots. Thus, the students will know that a plant needs air, light, warmth, water and nutrients to grow well and healthy.

The Concept Map

Questions

Must Do...
What are the basic needs of plant to grow well?

Should Do...
Give three important parts of the plant?

Could Do...
How the glucose and energy produce?

Week13 - Solids and Liquids

Virtual Experiment

Group Work - Topic: Solids and liquids

The experiment is about a substance or solid change to liquids when heated with different temperature.
Heat melts a solid and turns it into a liquid. Cooling freezes a liquid into a solid. Different solids melt at different temperatures, some high some low. These are called their melting points. Heat can change solids into liquids or gases. When we cool something we take heat away from it. Cooling changes a gas into a liquid and a liquid into a solid.

What do students learn from the experiment.

From the experiment, students can learn what happen to the solid if heated with different temperature. Students also will learn which substance is the highest temperature when heated and when cooling with 0°C, the liquids will change back to become Solid.

Week10 - Concept Map

Concept Map

Learn the concept Maps : What the heck is this?

Activity: In a group work, find a story from website, and create a concept maps based on the story which is related in maths and science. After that, create questions for Must Do, Should Do and Could Do. Then, post to the blog.

Click below to show the story of River Under the Ocean

The Concept Map

Questions:
  1. Must do….    List two types of water ?
  2. Should do….  What the diver found in the ocean?
  3. Could do ….   Explain how the hydrogen sulfide separated by two layer?

Week9 - Storytelling

Storytelling
  • From the website, find ICDL-International Children's Digital Library.
  • Then Read Books on Waldo one, two, three.
Activity: Find story from website that related to concept Maths & Science
H/W: Post the story into the blog.

My Story is Up in the Sky by David Lumerman

The story is from the website: http://www.lilfingers.com/sky/index.html

From the story, students can identify day and night, which there are 24 hours in a day.

The day is divided into "day (time)" and "night (-time)". Daytime is from sunrise (this varies, but we can say approximately 6am) to sunset (we can say approximately 6pm). Night-time is from sunset to sunrise.

Every day starts precisely at midnight. AM (Ante-Meridiem = before noon) starts just after midnight. PM (Post-Meridiem=after noon) starts just after midday. This means that 12am and 12pm have no meaning.

Students may also study The Water Cycle: Precipitation which water released from clouds in the form of rain, freezing rain, sleet, snow, or hail. It is the primary connection in the water cycle that provides for the delivery of atmospheric water to the Earth. Most precipitation falls as rain.

Students may also study about Rain and Rainbow. Therefore, students study different types of weather.

The Story

When you look into the sky, what do you see?

I see the sun shining right down on me!
the sun shining

When it's cloudy outside the sun goes away.
cloudy outside

With clouds around, it might rain all day.
rain rain go away!

After the rain what do we see?

A rainbow comes out as big as can be!
look at the rainbow!

Look in the sky, it gets dark soon...

...when it's dark enough you can see the moon!

Look again and you will see, the stars in the sky...

...just in time to say goodbye!

Week8 - Calculator

Using Calculator
  • Learn how to use calculator.
  • Activity:- In a Group Work with the title given by Dr Leong.
